ENDOSCOPIC INTRAGASTRIC BALLOON

It is an endoscopic procedure, during which a silicone medical balloon is inserted in the stomach to occupy about half of it. The balloon remains in the stomach for some time enabling a patient to feel fullness, i.e. limiting food intake, therefore losing the weight.

PATIENT ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Eligibility Criteria

  • Patients unable to lose weight with the help of physical exercises and healthy diet;
  • Patients, who are too ill, have morbid obesity or are not qualified to undergo more radical bariatric procedures due to different health conditions;
  • Patients, who will undergo a bariatric surgery (preparation).

Exclusion Criteria

  • Pregnancy;
  • Cortisone treatment;
  • Gastric ulcer in anamnesis.

RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS

The most frequently asked question is what if the gastric balloon bursts inside the stomach. The answer is that every patient can learn this from his or her urine colour. The balloon has a special solution inside, so if it bursts, the urine colour will change and the balloon will be safely removed in a hospital.

In general, the possibility to regain the weight after gastric balloon insertion procedure is higher than the one occurring after any bariatric surgery.

DIET AFTER GASTRIC BALLOON PROCEDURE

After the procedure patients should refrain from eating high-carb and junk food.

FEES OF GASTRIC BALLOON

Endoscopic Gastric Balloon procedure is not a surgery, so there will be no need for the operation theatre service and medical consumables. Thus, the cost of this procedure is quite lower than that of any bariatric surgery.
